What to know
Adults often need consistent, sufficient sleep, but individual needs vary. Insomnia, sleep apnea, restless legs, shift work, pain, medicines, and mood disorders can disrupt sleep.
Loud snoring, pauses in breathing, gasping, morning headaches, and daytime sleepiness may suggest sleep apnea.
Steps that may help
- Keep a regular sleep and wake time.
- Create a dark, quiet, cool sleep environment.
- Limit late caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, and heavy meals.
- Keep screens and work out of bed when possible.
- Do not drive when dangerously sleepy.
